Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Explain the general relationship between the product life cycle and cash flow.
Model answer
Cash flow is strongly negative during development and introduction and turns positive later. Each stage of the cycle has its own characteristic cash position.
- 2
Explain the cash position during the development stage.
Model answer
Development produces a heavy cash outflow on design, testing and tooling. Nothing comes in because the product is not yet on sale.
- 3
Explain the cash position during the introduction stage.
Model answer
Introduction brings the first cash inflows, but promotion spending is at its heaviest. Net cash flow is normally still negative at this point.
- 4
Explain the cash position during the growth stage.
Model answer
Growth turns net cash flow positive as sales climb and unit costs fall. Some cash is still absorbed by extra stock and new capacity.
- 5
Explain the cash position during the maturity stage.
Model answer
Maturity produces the strongest positive cash flow of the whole cycle. Development spending has ended and sales volume is at its peak.
- 6
Explain the cash position during the decline stage.
Model answer
Cash inflow shrinks in decline as sales fall away. Selling off remaining stock and equipment can bring a final one-off inflow.
