How does corporation tax affect a business?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a direct tax?
Model answer
A direct tax is levied on the income or the profits of a person or a company. Income tax, national insurance and corporation tax are the main examples.
- 2
What is an indirect tax?
Model answer
An indirect tax is levied on spending rather than on income. Value added tax and the excise duties on fuel, alcohol and tobacco are the main examples.
- 3
How does corporation tax affect a business?
Model answer
Corporation tax reduces the profit left for reinvestment or for distribution to shareholders. A lower rate raises retained profit and makes investment projects more attractive.
- 4
What rate of corporation tax applies in the United Kingdom, and to which profits?
Model answer
From April 2023 the main rate of United Kingdom corporation tax has been 25% on profits above £250,000. A small profits rate of 19% applies below £50,000, with marginal relief between the two.
- 5
How does value added tax affect a business?
Model answer
VAT is charged on most goods and services and is collected by the business on behalf of government. The standard United Kingdom rate has been 20% since January 2011.
- 6
What is the likely effect on demand of a rise in value added tax?
Model answer
A rise in VAT raises the price consumers pay, so quantity demanded usually falls. Businesses selling price-elastic goods lose the most sales.
