Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define contribution.
Model answer
Contribution is the amount left from the selling price of a unit once its variable cost has been paid. Contribution is what each unit contributes towards fixed costs and profit.
- 2
State the formula for contribution per unit.
Model answer
Contribution per unit equals selling price minus variable cost per unit. A product priced at £18 with a variable cost of £11 has a contribution of £7.
- 3
State two ways of calculating total contribution.
Model answer
Total contribution equals contribution per unit multiplied by the number of units sold. Total contribution can also be found as total revenue minus total variable costs.
- 4
A product sells for £45 and has variable costs of £27 per unit. Calculate contribution per unit.
Model answer
Contribution per unit is £45 − £27. Contribution per unit therefore comes to £18.
- 5
A firm sells 6,000 units with a contribution of £9 each. Calculate total contribution.
Model answer
Total contribution is 6,000 × £9. Total contribution therefore comes to £54,000.
- 6
State the relationship between total contribution, fixed costs and profit.
Model answer
Profit equals total contribution minus fixed costs. A firm with £54,000 of contribution and £40,000 of fixed costs makes £14,000 profit.
