Mayo and the Hawthorne studies
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Illumination experiments originally intended to test, relay assembly test room experiment and hawthorne effect.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What were the illumination experiments originally intended to test?
What did the illumination experiments actually find?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Who led the Hawthorne research and where did the studies take place?
Model answer
Elton Mayo led the later stages of the Hawthorne research with colleagues from Harvard. The work took place at Western Electric's Hawthorne plant near Chicago between 1924 and 1932.
- 2
What were the illumination experiments originally intended to test?
Model answer
The first experiments tested whether the level of lighting changed the output of assembly workers. Researchers expected brighter lighting to raise production.
- 3
What did the illumination experiments actually find?
Model answer
Output rose whether the lighting was raised or lowered. Physical conditions alone clearly did not explain how hard the group worked.
- 4
Describe the relay assembly test room experiment.
Model answer
A small group of women assembling telephone relays was moved to a separate room and observed. Rest breaks, hours and pay arrangements were varied over several years.
- 5
What happened to output in the relay assembly test room?
Model answer
Output rose through almost every change the researchers made. Production stayed high even when the original conditions were put back.
- 6
What is meant by the Hawthorne effect?
Model answer
The Hawthorne effect is a change in behaviour caused by the knowledge of being observed. Workers in the study raised output partly because researchers were taking an interest in them.
