Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

State the formula for total revenue.

    Model answer

Total revenue equals selling price multiplied by quantity sold. A business selling 2,000 units at £15 earns £30,000 of revenue.

  2. 2

A firm sells 4,500 units at £12 each. Calculate its total revenue.

    Model answer

Total revenue is 4,500 × £12. Total revenue therefore comes to £54,000.

  3. 3

A business has fixed costs of £25,000 and variable costs of £8 per unit. Calculate total costs at an output of 5,000 units.

    Model answer

Total variable cost is 5,000 × £8, giving £40,000. Total costs are £40,000 plus £25,000 of fixed costs, a total of £65,000.

  4. 4

A business earns £120,000 of revenue and incurs £95,000 of total costs. Calculate its profit.

    Model answer

Profit equals total revenue minus total costs. Profit here is £120,000 − £95,000, giving £25,000.

  5. 5

A shop's revenue is £48,000 and its total costs are £53,000. State the result and explain what it means.

    Model answer

Total costs exceed revenue by £5,000, so the shop makes a loss of £5,000. A loss on this scale drains the shop's cash reserves and cannot continue indefinitely.

  6. 6

Calculate the profit of a firm selling 3,000 units at £20 with fixed costs of £18,000 and variable costs of £11 per unit.

    Model answer

    Revenue is 3,000 × £20, giving £60,000, and total costs are £18,000 plus £33,000. Profit is £60,000 − £51,000, so the firm earns £9,000.
