Correlation, scatter graphs and extrapolation
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Line of best fit and one weakness of extrapolation as a forecasting technique.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a line of best fit?
How should the axes of a scatter graph be arranged?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does a business create a scatter graph?
Model answer
A scatter graph is created by plotting paired values of two variables as separate points. The pattern of the plotted points shows whether the two variables are related.
- 2
What is a line of best fit?
Model answer
A line of best fit is a straight line drawn through the middle of the plotted points. The line leaves roughly equal numbers of points on either side.
- 3
How should the axes of a scatter graph be arranged?
Model answer
The independent variable, such as advertising spending, goes on the horizontal axis. The dependent variable, such as sales revenue, goes on the vertical axis.
- 4
What does positive correlation look like on a scatter graph?
Model answer
The points slope upwards from left to right across the graph. The two variables move in the same direction, so higher advertising accompanies higher sales.
- 5
What does negative correlation look like on a scatter graph?
Model answer
The points slope downwards from left to right across the graph. One variable rises as the other falls, so a higher price accompanies lower volume.
- 6
What does it mean when a scatter graph shows no correlation?
Model answer
The points are scattered with no discernible pattern or slope. Correlation is non-existent, so one variable cannot be used to predict the other.
