Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by inflation?
Model answer
Inflation is a sustained rise in the general level of prices in an economy. Money loses purchasing power while inflation continues.
- 2
How is inflation measured in the United Kingdom?
Model answer
Inflation is measured by tracking the price of a representative basket of goods and services. The Consumer Prices Index is the main measure and is published monthly.
- 3
What is the CPI basket, and how is it kept relevant?
Model answer
The CPI basket is a weighted list of goods and services typical of household spending. The Office for National Statistics reviews the basket each year to reflect changing habits.
- 4
Why are the items in a price index weighted?
Model answer
Each weight reflects how much of household spending goes on that item. A rise in the price of fuel therefore moves the index more than a rise in a rarely bought item.
- 5
Distinguish between the Consumer Prices Index and the Retail Prices Index.
Model answer
The Consumer Prices Index excludes most housing costs, including mortgage interest payments. The Retail Prices Index includes those costs and uses a different averaging formula.
- 6
What is meant by demand-pull inflation?
Model answer
Demand-pull inflation happens when total demand grows faster than the economy can supply. Prices are bid up as buyers compete for limited output.
