Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a budget variance?
Model answer
A budget variance is the difference between a budgeted figure and the actual figure achieved. Variances are calculated for revenue, for costs and for profit.
- 2
How is a budget variance calculated?
Model answer
The budgeted figure is subtracted from the actual figure for the same item and period. The size of the gap is then labelled favourable or adverse.
- 3
What makes a variance favourable?
Model answer
A variance is favourable when the actual outcome leaves the business better off than the budget assumed. Higher revenue and lower costs each produce favourable variances.
- 4
What makes a variance adverse?
Model answer
A variance is adverse when the actual outcome leaves the business worse off than budgeted. Lower revenue and higher costs each produce adverse variances.
- 5
Budgeted labour cost was £45,000 and actual labour cost was £48,000. Calculate the variance and state its type.
Model answer
Actual cost exceeds budget by £3,000. The variance is adverse, because the extra spending reduces profit.
- 6
Budgeted sales revenue was £250,000 and actual revenue was £268,000. Calculate the variance and state its type.
Model answer
Actual revenue exceeds budget by £18,000. The variance is favourable, because the extra income raises profit.
