Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State what an income statement shows.
Model answer
An income statement shows the revenue, costs and profit of a business over a financial year. The statement is also called a trading, profit and loss account.
- 2
Name the three sections of a trading, profit and loss account.
Model answer
The three sections are the trading account, the profit and loss account and the appropriation account. Each section works down from revenue towards profit for the owners.
- 3
Explain what the trading account shows.
Model answer
The trading account shows revenue less the cost of sales. The figure produced is gross profit.
- 4
Define revenue as it appears in an income statement.
Model answer
Revenue in an income statement is the total value of goods and services sold in the year. Revenue is recorded when the sale is made, not when the cash arrives.
- 5
Define cost of sales.
Model answer
Cost of sales is the direct cost of producing the goods that were actually sold. Raw materials and factory labour are the main items.
- 6
State the formula for cost of sales using inventory figures.
Model answer
Cost of sales equals opening inventory plus purchases minus closing inventory. Only the goods actually sold are charged against the year's revenue.
