- 1
Who set out a contingency theory of leadership, and what date is attached to it?
Model answer
F. Fiedler set out a contingency theory of leadership, dated 1976. Fiedler argued that no single style is best in every situation.
- 2
What does a contingency theory of leadership claim?
Model answer
A contingency theory claims that the effectiveness of a leader depends on the situation faced. The same person can succeed in one setting and fail in another.
- 3
Name the three situational factors in Fiedler's model.
Model answer
Fiedler judged a situation by the relations between leader and members, the structure of the task and the leader's position power. A situation strong on all three is highly favourable.
- 4
How did Fiedler classify a leader as task-oriented or relationship-oriented?
Model answer
Fiedler asked leaders to rate the colleague they had worked with least well. A harsh rating indicated a task-oriented leader and a generous one a relationship-oriented leader.
- 5
What did Fiedler conclude about when each type of leader performs best?
Model answer
Fiedler found that task-oriented leaders perform best in very favourable or very unfavourable situations. Relationship-oriented leaders perform best where conditions are only moderately favourable.
- 6
Why did Fiedler argue that the situation should be changed to fit the leader?
Model answer
Fiedler treated leadership style as a fairly fixed part of personality. Matching a leader to a suitable situation is therefore easier than retraining the leader.
