Define variable costs.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define fixed costs.
Model answer
Fixed costs are costs that do not change with the level of output. Rent, business rates, insurance and salaried staff are typical fixed costs.
- 2
Define variable costs.
Model answer
Variable costs are costs that change directly in proportion to output. Raw materials, packaging and piece-rate wages are typical variable costs.
- 3
What is a semi-variable cost?
Model answer
A semi-variable cost has a fixed element and a variable element. A mobile phone contract with a monthly line rental plus a charge per call is semi-variable.
- 4
Give an example of a semi-variable cost in a delivery business and explain both parts.
Model answer
A delivery van carries fixed annual road tax and insurance whatever the mileage. Fuel is the variable element because fuel spending rises with every mile driven.
- 5
A workshop pays £300 a month for machine hire plus £2 for every hour the machine runs. Calculate the cost of a month in which the machine runs for 250 hours.
Model answer
The variable element is 250 × £2, which comes to £500. The fixed hire charge of £300 is then added, so the total cost is £800.
- 6
Explain what happens to fixed cost per unit as output rises.
Model answer
Fixed cost per unit falls as output rises because the same total fixed cost is spread over more units. A business producing 10,000 units carries a lower fixed cost per unit than one producing 1,000.
