Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is meant by appraisal?

    Model answer

Appraisal is a formal review of how well an employee has performed over a period. Targets for the coming period are agreed at the same time.

  2. 2

    State three purposes of appraisal.

    Model answer

Appraisal identifies training needs, sets new targets and reviews progress against previous targets. Decisions on pay and promotion often rest on the record it produces.

  3. 3

What is meant by superior's assessment?

    Model answer

A superior's assessment is an appraisal carried out by the employee's own line manager. The manager reports on performance, conduct and progress against targets.

  4. 4

Give one strength and one weakness of superior's assessment.

    Model answer

A line manager sees the employee's work daily and knows the job well. Personal bias and a reluctance to deliver bad news can distort the judgement.

  5. 5

What is meant by peer assessment?

    Model answer

Peer assessment collects views on an employee from colleagues at the same level. Colleagues often see teamwork that a manager never observes.

  6. 6

Give one weakness of peer assessment.

    Model answer

Colleagues may inflate ratings to protect friendships within the team. Rivalry for promotion can equally produce unfairly harsh judgements.
