Alcohols and Phenols

Alcohols with hydrogen halides, ethanoyl chloride and carboxylic acids

  • 3 things to know
  • Component 2

Overview

Recall questions on the products and conditions for each of the three reactions, the equations, the observations with ethanoyl chloride, the ester formed with a carboxylic acid and its catalyst, and how the reactivity of the three reagents compares.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What class of compound is produced when an alcohol reacts with a hydrogen halide?

    Model answer

A halogenoalkane is produced, together with water.

  2. 2

Give the equation for the reaction of ethanol with hydrogen bromide.

    Model answer

    C₂H₅OH + HBr → C₂H₅Br + H₂O.

  3. 3

How is the hydrogen bromide usually supplied when a bromoalkane is prepared from an alcohol?

    Model answer

It is generated in the reaction flask by warming the alcohol with sodium bromide and 50% sulfuric acid, so the hydrogen bromide is made in the mixture as it is needed rather than handled as a gas.

  4. 4

Explain why concentrated sulfuric acid must not be used when iodoethane is prepared from ethanol and potassium iodide.

    Model answer

Concentrated sulfuric acid oxidises iodide ions to iodine, so the hydrogen iodide is destroyed before it can react with the alcohol. Concentrated phosphoric acid is used instead, because it releases the hydrogen halide without oxidising it.

  5. 5

State the order of reactivity of primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols towards a hydrogen halide.

    Model answer

Tertiary alcohols react fastest, secondary alcohols more slowly and primary alcohols slowest of all.

  6. 6

Explain why the alcohol's oxygen atom must be protonated before a halide ion can displace the oxygen.

    Model answer

The hydroxide ion is a very poor leaving group, but once the oxygen has accepted a proton the group can leave as a neutral water molecule, which is displaced far more easily.
