Chemical Kinetics
- 5 subtopics
- 15 things to know
- Component 1
What Chemical Kinetics covers
Chemical Kinetics is examined in Component 1, Physical and Inorganic Chemistry, and drawn on again in Component 3. It covers measuring reaction rate by sampling and quenching, the rate equation, order and the rate constant, finding reaction order from experimental results, the rate-determining step and reaction mechanism and the Arrhenius equation and activation energy.
Where it is assessed

What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What order with respect to A follows when doubling its concentration doubles the rate, quadruples it, or leaves it unchanged?
What is meant by sampling in a kinetics experiment?
Write the general form of the rate equation for a reaction involving reactants A and B.
Which species appear in the rate equation of a multi-step reaction?
What is meant by quenching a sample?
State the units of the rate constant for a second-order reaction.
In two runs the concentration of A is doubled and the rate doubles. State the order with respect to A.
A halogenoalkane is hydrolysed and the rate equation is found to be rate = k[RX]. What does this reveal about the slow step?
Write the Arrhenius equation.
Which reagent is added to quench a sample taken from an acid-catalysed reaction?
State the units of the rate constant for a reaction that is third order overall.
In two runs the concentration of A is doubled and the rate becomes four times as large. State the order with respect to A.
For the reaction NO₂ + CO → NO + CO₂ the rate equation is rate = k[NO₂]². What does this show about carbon monoxide?
Write the Arrhenius equation in its logarithmic form.

Questions from this topic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by sampling in a kinetics experiment?
Model answer
Small measured portions of the reaction mixture are withdrawn at recorded times so that their composition can be determined.
- 2
What is meant by quenching a sample?
Model answer
Quenching is stopping the reaction in a withdrawn sample immediately, so that its composition cannot change before it is analysed.
- 3
Explain why a sample has to be quenched before it is analysed.
Model answer
Analysis such as a titration takes several minutes, and an unquenched sample would go on reacting during that time and give a composition that is no longer the one at the sampling time.
- 4
Give three ways in which a withdrawn sample can be quenched.
Model answer
It can be run into a large volume of ice-cold water, cooled rapidly in an ice bath, or treated with a reagent that removes the catalyst.
- 5
Explain how running a sample into a large volume of ice-cold water quenches it.
Model answer
Both the concentrations and the temperature fall sharply, so the rate becomes negligibly small.
- 6
Which reagent is added to quench a sample taken from an acid-catalysed reaction?
Model answer
Sodium hydrogencarbonate, which neutralises the acid catalyst.
