Atom economy, percentage yield and percentage error
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Atom economy and percentage yield.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Heating 5.00 g of calcium carbonate gives 2.35 g of calcium oxide. Calculate the percentage yield.
Define atom economy.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define atom economy.
Model answer
Atom economy is the mass of the desired product expressed as a percentage of the total mass of all the products formed.
- 2
State the expression used to calculate atom economy.
Model answer
Atom economy is the relative mass of the wanted product, multiplied by its coefficient, divided by the total relative mass of all the reactants, then multiplied by 100.
- 3
Why does an addition reaction always have an atom economy of 100%?
Model answer
Every atom of both reactants ends up in the single product, so nothing is diverted into a by-product.
- 4
Calculate the atom economy for the production of calcium oxide from calcium carbonate.
Model answer
For CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂ the atom economy is 56.1 ÷ 100.1 × 100 = 56.0%.
- 5
Why does industry value a high atom economy?
Model answer
A greater fraction of the raw material becomes useful product, so less is bought and wasted, the cost of separating and disposing of by-products falls, and the environmental impact of the process is smaller.
- 6
Define percentage yield.
Model answer
Percentage yield is the amount of product actually obtained expressed as a percentage of the theoretical amount predicted by the balanced equation.
