Catalysts and how they work
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Three characteristics of a catalyst, how a catalyst increases the rate of a reaction and heterogeneous catalyst.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define a catalyst.
Explain why a catalyst does not change the enthalpy change of a reaction.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define a catalyst.
Model answer
A catalyst is a substance that increases the rate of a reaction without being used up itself.
- 2
State three characteristics of a catalyst.
Model answer
It speeds up the reaction, it is chemically unchanged at the end of the reaction, and it is needed in only a small amount compared with the reactants.
- 3
Explain how a catalyst increases the rate of a reaction.
Model answer
It provides an alternative reaction route with a lower activation energy, so a much larger proportion of collisions has enough energy to react.
- 4
Explain why a catalyst does not change the enthalpy change of a reaction.
Model answer
The reactants and the products are unchanged, so the difference in enthalpy between them is the same whichever route is taken.
- 5
Explain why a catalyst does not change the position of an equilibrium.
Model answer
It lowers the activation energy of the forward and reverse reactions by the same amount, so both are speeded up equally and the equilibrium composition is unaffected.
- 6
What is a heterogeneous catalyst?
Model answer
A heterogeneous catalyst is one in a different physical state from the reactants, most commonly a solid used with gases or with a solution.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Rates of Reaction, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
