Heating, heating under reflux and distillation
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Electric heating mantle and purpose of the still head in a simple distillation apparatus.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does a fractionating column contain, and why does it separate liquids whose boiling temperatures are close together?
What happens to the separation if the flask is heated too strongly during a fractional distillation?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What glassware makes up a reflux assembly and how is it supported?
Model answer
A round-bottomed or pear-shaped flask carries a vertical condenser fitted to its neck, and both are held by clamps on a retort stand, the flask clamped at the neck so it is not squeezed and the condenser clamped so its weight does not rest on the joint.
- 2
Why is a flask that is to be heated filled to no more than about half its capacity?
Model answer
Boiling liquid froths and its vapour needs room to expand, and an overfull flask throws liquid up into the condenser so that impure material is carried over or the contents are lost.
- 3
Which heat source is used for a liquid that boils below 100 °C, and why?
Model answer
A water bath is used, because it cannot rise above 100 °C, it heats the flask evenly all over its wetted surface, and it involves no flame near flammable vapour.
- 4
When would a sand bath be used in preference to a water bath?
Model answer
A sand bath is used when the liquid must be held above 100 °C, since the sand can be heated well beyond that while still spreading the heat evenly around the flask instead of concentrating it at one spot.
- 5
What is an electric heating mantle, and why is it favoured for organic preparations?
Model answer
It is a shaped fabric cradle containing a heating element that fits the curve of a round-bottomed flask. It heats a large area of glass evenly at a temperature that can be set, and produces no flame, so flammable vapours are not ignited.
- 6
What is the purpose of the still head in a simple distillation apparatus?
Model answer
It sits on top of the flask and carries the thermometer in one socket and the side arm to the condenser in the other, so the vapour leaving the flask passes the thermometer bulb on its way to be condensed.
