Metallic bonding and the electron sea model
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Electron sea model of a metal and metallic bond.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is a metal a good conductor of heat?
State two factors that make metallic bonding stronger.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the electron sea model of a metal.
Model answer
A metal is a regular lattice of positive ions surrounded by a sea of delocalised electrons, which came from the outer shells of the atoms and are free to move throughout the whole structure.
- 2
What is the metallic bond?
Model answer
It is the electrostatic attraction between the lattice of positive ions and the sea of delocalised electrons that surrounds them.
- 3
Why does a metal conduct electricity?
Model answer
Its delocalised electrons are free to move through the structure, so they drift and carry charge as soon as a potential difference is applied.
- 4
Why is a metal a good conductor of heat?
Model answer
The mobile electrons gain kinetic energy at the hot end and travel rapidly through the metal, passing that energy on by collisions.
- 5
Why is a metal malleable and ductile?
Model answer
Layers of positive ions can slide over one another without destroying the bonding, because the delocalised electrons move with them and the attraction between ions and electrons is not directional.
- 6
State two factors that make metallic bonding stronger.
Model answer
A larger charge on each ion, which also means more delocalised electrons, and a smaller ionic radius both increase the attraction.
