Mass spectra, isotopic abundance and relative atomic mass
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Recall questions on reading a mass spectrum, the m/z axis and peak heights, calculating relative atomic mass as a weighted mean of the isotopic abundances, working backwards from a known mass to find abundances, and why the abundances must total one hundred per cent.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe how relative atomic mass is calculated from mass spectrum data.
Chlorine consists of 75.0% ³⁵Cl and 25.0% ³⁷Cl. Calculate its relative atomic mass.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What quantities are plotted on the two axes of a mass spectrum?
Model answer
Mass-to-charge ratio is plotted on the horizontal axis and relative abundance or relative intensity on the vertical axis.
- 2
Describe how relative atomic mass is calculated from mass spectrum data.
Model answer
Multiply each isotopic mass by its percentage abundance, add all the products together and divide the total by 100.
- 3
Chlorine consists of 75.0% ³⁵Cl and 25.0% ³⁷Cl. Calculate its relative atomic mass.
Model answer
(75.0 × 35 + 25.0 × 37) ÷ 100 = (2625 + 925) ÷ 100 = 35.5.
- 4
Why does the mass spectrum of chlorine gas show peaks at m/z 70, 72 and 74?
Model answer
These are the molecular ions containing two ³⁵Cl atoms, one of each isotope, and two ³⁷Cl atoms respectively.
- 5
In what ratio do the three molecular ion peaks of chlorine appear, and why?
Model answer
They appear in the ratio 9:6:1, because each atom has a three in four chance of being ³⁵Cl and a one in four chance of being ³⁷Cl, giving probabilities of 9/16, 6/16 and 1/16.
- 6
Why does the spectrum of chlorine gas also show peaks at m/z 35 and 37, and in what ratio?
Model answer
Fragmentation splits some molecular ions into single chlorine ions, which appear at 35 and 37 in the three to one ratio of the two isotopes.
