Overview
Why ethanoic acid is unsuitable for acidifying a manganate(VII) titration, purpose of a rough titration and concordant titres.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain why nitric acid must not be used to acidify a manganate(VII) titration.
Why is the burette reading for potassium manganate(VII) taken at the top of the liquid surface?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which acid is used to acidify a manganate(VII) titration, and why is it chosen?
Model answer
Dilute sulfuric acid is used, because it is a strong acid that supplies hydrogen ions fully and is not itself oxidised by manganate(VII).
- 2
Explain why hydrochloric acid must not be used to acidify a manganate(VII) titration.
Model answer
Manganate(VII) oxidises chloride ions to chlorine, so extra titrant is used up and the calculated result is too high.
- 3
Explain why nitric acid must not be used to acidify a manganate(VII) titration.
Model answer
Nitric acid is itself an oxidising agent, so it would oxidise some of the substance being determined before the titration began.
- 4
Explain why ethanoic acid is unsuitable for acidifying a manganate(VII) titration.
Model answer
It is a weak acid and does not give a high enough hydrogen ion concentration for the reduction to manganese(II) to go to completion.
- 5
Why is potassium manganate(VII) described as self-indicating?
Model answer
Its intense purple colour is destroyed as it reacts, and the first drop added beyond the end-point turns the solution a permanent pale pink.
- 6
Why is the burette reading for potassium manganate(VII) taken at the top of the liquid surface?
Model answer
The solution is so deeply coloured that the bottom of the meniscus cannot be seen, so the upper surface is read instead.
