Electronegativity and bond polarity
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Trend in electronegativity across a period, trend in electronegativity down a group and polar covalent bond.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which is the most electronegative element, and what value is it given?
Explain the trend in electronegativity down a group.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define electronegativity.
Model answer
Electronegativity is the power of an atom to attract the pair of electrons in a covalent bond towards itself.
- 2
On which scale are electronegativity values usually quoted?
Model answer
They are quoted on the Pauling scale.
- 3
Which is the most electronegative element, and what value is it given?
Model answer
Fluorine is the most electronegative element and is assigned a value of 4.0.
- 4
Explain the trend in electronegativity across a period.
Model answer
Electronegativity increases, because the nuclear charge rises while the bonding pair stays in the same shell at a similar distance and with similar shielding, so it is pulled more strongly.
- 5
Explain the trend in electronegativity down a group.
Model answer
Electronegativity decreases, because the bonding pair lies further from the nucleus and is screened by more inner shells, so the attraction on it is weaker.
- 6
What is a polar covalent bond?
Model answer
It is a bond between atoms of different electronegativity in which the shared pair lies nearer the more electronegative atom, giving that atom a partial negative charge and the other a partial positive charge.
