Titration procedure and the choice of indicator
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Rough titration and why is one carried out first, concordant titres and colour of methyl orange in acidic and in alkaline solution.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are concordant titres, and which results are used to calculate the mean?
Why is an outlying titre left out when the mean is calculated?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a rough titration and why is one carried out first?
Model answer
It is a quick first run in which the titrant is added rapidly to find roughly where the end point falls, so that in later runs the solution can be added swiftly up to just short of that volume and dropwise thereafter.
- 2
What are concordant titres, and which results are used to calculate the mean?
Model answer
Concordant titres are repeat values that agree within 0.10 cm³ of one another, and only these are averaged, with the rough titration and any discordant result excluded.
- 3
Why is an outlying titre left out when the mean is calculated?
Model answer
A value well away from the others indicates that something went wrong in that run, such as an overshoot or a misread scale, so including it would shift the mean away from the true value.
- 4
How is the titrant added once the end point is being approached?
Model answer
It is added a drop at a time with continuous swirling, and towards the very end a part-drop is formed on the jet and washed in with distilled water so the end point is not overshot.
- 5
Why does washing the inside walls of the conical flask with distilled water near the end point not change the titre?
Model answer
The water adds no further acid or alkali and only carries splashes back into the bulk of the solution, so the amount of substance in the flask is unchanged while every drop delivered is included in the reaction.
- 6
What condition must an indicator satisfy if it is to be used for a particular titration?
Model answer
Its pH range must lie wholly within the steep, near-vertical section of the titration curve, so that the colour change is completed by a single drop of titrant at the equivalence point.
