Overview
Purpose of heating a reaction mixture under reflux, how a reflux apparatus is arranged and purpose of distillation in an organic preparation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Where should the thermometer bulb be placed during a distillation, and why?
Why must a separating funnel be vented during shaking?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the purpose of heating a reaction mixture under reflux?
Model answer
It allows the mixture to be heated for a long time at the boiling temperature without any of the volatile substances escaping.
- 2
Describe how a reflux apparatus is arranged.
Model answer
A vertical condenser is fitted to the top of the flask so the vapour condenses and runs back into the mixture, with water entering the condenser jacket at the bottom.
- 3
Why must the apparatus never be sealed during reflux?
Model answer
Pressure would build up inside as the mixture is heated and the apparatus could burst.
- 4
Why is the condenser water fed in at the bottom of the jacket rather than the top?
Model answer
Filling against gravity keeps the jacket full of water along its whole length, so the vapour meets a cold surface the entire way up.
- 5
What is the purpose of distillation in an organic preparation?
Model answer
It separates the product from the mixture by boiling it off and condensing it, collecting only the fraction that boils over the expected range.
- 6
How does the apparatus for distillation differ from that for reflux?
Model answer
The condenser lies at an angle from the top of the flask so the vapour is led away and collected, instead of running back into the mixture.
