Heating under reflux
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Heating a reaction mixture under reflux and arrangement of the apparatus used for reflux.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is a water bath or electric heating mantle used rather than a Bunsen flame when refluxing an organic mixture?
Describe the reflux preparation of butan-1-ol from 1-bromobutane.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by heating a reaction mixture under reflux?
Model answer
It means boiling the mixture with a vertical condenser fitted above it, so that vapour condenses and runs back into the flask.
- 2
Give the main purpose of refluxing an organic reaction mixture.
Model answer
It allows the mixture to be heated for a long period at the boiling temperature of the solvent without any of the volatile reactants or products escaping.
- 3
Describe the arrangement of the apparatus used for reflux.
Model answer
A round-bottomed or pear-shaped flask holding the mixture is clamped over a heat source, with a Liebig condenser fitted vertically into its neck and cooling water running through the outer jacket.
- 4
At which end does the cooling water enter the condenser, and why?
Model answer
It enters at the lower end, so that the jacket fills completely and the water flows against the direction of the descending condensate for the most efficient cooling.
- 5
Why must the top of the reflux condenser be left open to the air?
Model answer
A sealed apparatus would allow pressure to build up as the mixture boiled, and the glassware could burst.
- 6
Why are anti-bumping granules added to the flask?
Model answer
They provide sites for small bubbles to form steadily, so the liquid boils smoothly instead of erupting suddenly.
