Purification and melting temperature
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Apparatus used to filter the crystals from the cold mixture and why an impurity lowers and broadens the melting temperature.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is the hot solution filtered before it is allowed to cool during a recrystallisation?
Name the apparatus used to filter the crystals from the cold mixture in a recrystallisation
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is recrystallisation used for?
Model answer
Purifying a solid organic product by dissolving it in a hot solvent and letting the pure compound crystallise out as the solution cools.
- 2
What property must a suitable recrystallisation solvent have?
Model answer
The compound must be very soluble in it when hot and only sparingly soluble when cold, while the impurities either stay dissolved or do not dissolve at all.
- 3
Why is the minimum volume of hot solvent used?
Model answer
Using more solvent than necessary leaves the product dissolved as the solution cools, so less of it crystallises out.
- 4
Why is the hot solution filtered before it is allowed to cool?
Model answer
To remove any insoluble impurities while the product itself is still in solution.
- 5
Why are the crystals washed with a little cold solvent?
Model answer
It rinses away the mother liquor holding the soluble impurities without dissolving much of the product.
- 6
Name the apparatus used to filter the crystals from the cold mixture.
Model answer
A Buchner or Hirsch funnel with a filter flask connected to a vacuum pump.
