Filtration, purification and qualitative testing

  • 3 things to know
  • Component 3

Overview

Recall questions on fluted filter paper and gravity against reduced pressure filtration, deciding whether the solid or the filtrate is the product, the requirements of a recrystallisation solvent, hot filtration and slow cooling, drying a liquid product, and running a qualitative test with a control.

Key term

Compare gravity filtration with filtration under reduced pressure.

Key term

What apparatus is used for filtration under reduced pressure, and why is the paper wetted before the solid is poured in?

Key term

How do you decide whether the solid or the filtrate is the product after a filtration?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why is filter paper folded into flutes for a gravity filtration?

    Model answer

Fluting presents a much larger area of paper to the liquid and keeps most of the paper away from the glass of the funnel, so the filtrate runs through several times faster than through a plain cone.

  2. 2

Compare gravity filtration with filtration under reduced pressure.

    Model answer

Gravity filtration is slow but gentle and is used for hot solutions and for small amounts, while filtration under reduced pressure pulls the liquid through in seconds and leaves a much drier solid, which suits collecting crystals in quantity.

  3. 3

What apparatus is used for filtration under reduced pressure, and why is the paper wetted before the solid is poured in?

    Model answer

A Büchner or Hirsch funnel is seated in a side-arm flask connected to a filter pump. The paper is wetted with a little of the solvent so it seals against the perforated plate, otherwise solid slips underneath the edge of the paper and is lost.

  4. 4

How do you decide whether the solid or the filtrate is the product after a filtration?

    Model answer

It depends on the solubility of the substance wanted in the solvent used. The solid is kept when the product is insoluble and the impurities dissolve, and the filtrate is kept when the product has dissolved and the insoluble matter is the impurity.

  5. 5

On what property of a solid does purification by recrystallisation depend?

    Model answer

It depends on the solubility of the compound rising steeply with temperature, so that it dissolves in a small volume of hot solvent and most of it comes out again on cooling, while impurities present in small amounts stay dissolved in the cold solvent.

  6. 6

What makes a solvent suitable for recrystallising a particular solid?

    Model answer

The solid must be very soluble in it hot and only slightly soluble cold, the impurities must either be insoluble hot or stay soluble cold, and the solvent must not react with the compound and should boil below the melting temperature of the solid.
