Acid-base titrations
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Acid-base titration used to find, standard solution and end point of a titration.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain how a double titration allows a mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate to be analysed.
What is a standard solution?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an acid-base titration used to find?
Model answer
It is used to find an unknown concentration by measuring exactly what volume of a solution of known concentration reacts with a measured volume of the unknown.
- 2
What is a standard solution?
Model answer
A standard solution is one whose concentration is known accurately.
- 3
Describe how a standard solution is prepared from a weighed solid.
Model answer
The solid is weighed accurately and dissolved in a small volume of distilled water, the solution and all washings are transferred to a volumetric flask, and water is added to the graduation mark before the stoppered flask is inverted repeatedly to mix.
- 4
What is meant by the end point of a titration?
Model answer
The end point is the moment at which the indicator changes colour, showing that the reaction between the two solutions is just complete.
- 5
Name a suitable indicator for titrating a strong acid against a weak base, and give its colour change.
Model answer
Methyl orange is suitable, and it changes from red in acid to yellow in alkali.
- 6
Name a suitable indicator for titrating a weak acid against a strong base, and give the colour it turns at the end point.
Model answer
Phenolphthalein is suitable, and it changes from colourless to pink.
