The hydrogen fuel cell
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Recall questions on the reactants and the overall reaction, the electrode reactions in acid and in alkaline conditions, the advantages over a combustion engine, the practical difficulties of storing and producing hydrogen, and both sides of the argument about hydrogen as a fuel.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Write the overall equation for the reaction in a hydrogen–oxygen fuel cell.
Write the electrode reaction at the negative electrode of an alkaline hydrogen fuel cell.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a fuel cell?
Model answer
A fuel cell is an electrochemical cell in which the fuel and the oxidant are fed in continuously from outside, so it delivers a voltage for as long as they are supplied.
- 2
Write the overall equation for the reaction in a hydrogen–oxygen fuel cell.
Model answer
2H₂(g) + O₂(g) → 2H₂O(l).
- 3
Write the electrode reaction at the negative electrode of an alkaline hydrogen fuel cell.
Model answer
H₂(g) + 2OH⁻(aq) → 2H₂O(l) + 2e⁻.
- 4
Write the electrode reaction at the positive electrode of an alkaline hydrogen fuel cell.
Model answer
O₂(g) + 2H₂O(l) + 4e⁻ → 4OH⁻(aq).
- 5
Write the electrode reaction at the negative electrode of a hydrogen fuel cell that uses an acidic polymer membrane.
Model answer
H₂(g) → 2H⁺(aq) + 2e⁻.
- 6
Write the electrode reaction at the positive electrode of a hydrogen fuel cell that uses an acidic polymer membrane.
Model answer
O₂(g) + 4H⁺(aq) + 4e⁻ → 2H₂O(l).
