Basic Ideas About Atoms
Behaviour of α, β and γ radiation
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Alpha particle, penetrating power of alpha radiation and penetrating power of beta radiation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How do the three types of radiation behave in a magnetic field?
State the penetrating power of beta radiation.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an alpha particle?
Model answer
An alpha particle is a helium-4 nucleus, made of two protons and two neutrons, and it carries a charge of 2+.
- 2
In which direction is an alpha particle deflected as it crosses an electric field?
Model answer
It is deflected towards the negatively charged plate, because it carries a positive charge.
- 3
In which direction is a beta-minus particle deflected in an electric field?
Model answer
It is deflected towards the positively charged plate, which is the opposite direction to an alpha particle.
- 4
Why is a beta particle deflected much more than an alpha particle in the same electric field?
Model answer
Although it carries only half the magnitude of charge, its mass is thousands of times smaller, so the electric force gives it a far greater acceleration.
- 5
How does gamma radiation behave in an electric field?
Model answer
It passes straight through undeflected, because it carries no charge and has no mass.
- 6
How do the three types of radiation behave in a magnetic field?
Model answer
Alpha and beta particles are deflected in opposite directions, at right angles to both the field and their direction of travel, while gamma radiation is not deflected at all.
