Empirical and molecular formulae
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Term empirical formula and term molecular formula.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define the term empirical formula.
Define the term molecular formula.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the term empirical formula.
Model answer
The empirical formula is the simplest whole-number ratio of the atoms of each element present in a compound.
- 2
Define the term molecular formula.
Model answer
The molecular formula gives the actual number of atoms of each element present in one molecule of the compound.
- 3
How is a molecular formula related to the corresponding empirical formula?
Model answer
The molecular formula is always a whole-number multiple of the empirical formula.
- 4
Describe the steps used to find an empirical formula from percentage composition by mass.
Model answer
Divide each percentage by the relative atomic mass of that element, divide all the results by the smallest of them, and then scale up to the nearest whole numbers.
- 5
A compound contains 40.0% carbon, 6.7% hydrogen and 53.3% oxygen by mass. Find its empirical formula.
Model answer
Dividing gives 40.0/12.0 = 3.33, 6.7/1.0 = 6.7 and 53.3/16.0 = 3.33, and dividing by 3.33 gives a ratio of 1:2:1, so the empirical formula is CH₂O.
- 6
A compound of empirical formula CH₂O has a relative molecular mass of 180. What is its molecular formula?
Model answer
The empirical formula mass is 30.0 and 180 ÷ 30.0 = 6, so the molecular formula is C₆H₁₂O₆.
