Simple Equilibria and Acid-Base Reactions
Strong and weak acids, pH and hydrogen ion concentration
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Recall questions on the difference between a strong and a weak acid and between strength and concentration, the definition of pH, calculating pH from the hydrogen ion concentration and back again, the pH of a strong acid of stated concentration, and why a weak acid of the same concentration has a higher pH.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Write the equation for the dissociation of ethanoic acid in water.
Why is an equilibrium arrow used for ethanoic acid but a single arrow for hydrochloric acid?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Explain the difference between a strong acid and a weak acid.
Model answer
A strong acid dissociates completely into ions in aqueous solution, whereas a weak acid dissociates only partially and most of it remains as undissociated molecules.
- 2
Write the equation for the dissociation of ethanoic acid in water.
Model answer
CH₃COOH(aq) ⇌ H⁺(aq) + CH₃COO⁻(aq).
- 3
Why is an equilibrium arrow used for ethanoic acid but a single arrow for hydrochloric acid?
Model answer
Ethanoic acid dissociates only partly so an equilibrium is set up, while hydrochloric acid dissociates completely so the change goes to completion.
- 4
Give the relationship between pH and hydrogen ion concentration.
Model answer
pH = −log[H⁺(aq)].
- 5
Calculate the pH of a solution in which [H⁺] is 5.0 × 10⁻³ mol dm⁻³.
Model answer
pH = −log(5.0 × 10⁻³) = 2.30.
- 6
Calculate the pH of 0.0250 mol dm⁻³ hydrochloric acid.
Model answer
Hydrochloric acid is strong, so [H⁺] = 0.0250 mol dm⁻³ and pH = −log(0.0250) = 1.60.
