Fatigue and Recovery
Lactate accumulation, OBLA and DOMS
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Lactic acid and lactate, why lactate accumulates, OBLA and resting lactate, the incremental treadmill test, endurance training and OBLA, comparing two athletes, field lactate testing, and DOMS, its causes and prevention.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the difference between lactic acid and lactate?
Why does lactic acid accumulate when exercise becomes intense?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does a build-up of lactic acid cause fatigue?
Model answer
Lactic acid releases hydrogen ions, which make the muscle more acidic. The rising acidity interferes with muscle contraction and causes a burning pain.
- 2
What is the difference between lactic acid and lactate?
Model answer
Lactic acid splits almost at once into lactate and hydrogen ions. The hydrogen ions cause the acidity, while lactate is what a blood test measures.
- 3
Why does lactic acid accumulate when exercise becomes intense?
Model answer
Oxygen supply cannot meet the demand of the working muscles. Lactic acid is then produced faster than it can be removed.
- 4
What is OBLA?
Model answer
OBLA is the onset of blood lactate accumulation. OBLA marks the point at which blood lactate starts to rise rapidly, usually at about 4 mmol/L.
- 5
What is a typical resting blood lactate level?
Model answer
Blood lactate at rest is usually about 1 to 2 mmol/L. Levels rise well above this during intense exercise.
- 6
Describe how blood lactate changes during an incremental treadmill test.
Model answer
Blood lactate stays low and fairly steady at low speeds. The curve then bends sharply upwards past OBLA as lactate accumulates.
