Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does PRICE stand for?
Model answer
PRICE stands for protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation. Some versions give the P as pressure.
- 2
Which injuries is PRICE used to treat?
Model answer
PRICE is used for minor soft-tissue injuries such as strains and sprains. PRICE is applied in the first 48 to 72 hours after injury.
- 3
What is the difference between a strain and a sprain?
Model answer
A strain is an overstretched or torn muscle or tendon. A sprain is an overstretched or torn ligament.
- 4
Why is ice applied to a sprained ankle?
Model answer
Ice makes the blood vessels constrict, reducing bleeding and swelling in the tissue. Ice also numbs the area and relieves pain.
- 5
How should ice be applied safely?
Model answer
Ice should be wrapped in a cloth and never placed directly on the skin. Ice is applied for about 15 to 20 minutes at a time and repeated every few hours.
- 6
Why is compression used after an ankle sprain?
Model answer
A firm bandage limits the build-up of fluid, reducing swelling. The bandage also supports the injured joint.
