Planes, Axes and Movement Patterns
Joint movement terms in sporting actions
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Flexion and extension, abduction and adduction, circumduction, pronation and supination, rotation, plantar flexion and dorsiflexion, lateral flexion, horizontal abduction and adduction, and the movements in jumps, sprints, passes and kicks.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the difference between flexion and extension?
What are abduction and adduction? Give a sporting example.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the difference between flexion and extension?
Model answer
Flexion decreases the angle at a joint, and extension increases it. The knee flexes as a jumper crouches and extends at take-off.
- 2
What are abduction and adduction? Give a sporting example.
Model answer
Abduction moves a limb away from the midline of the body, and adduction moves it back towards the midline. The legs abduct and then adduct in a breaststroke kick.
- 3
What is circumduction? Give a sporting example.
Model answer
Circumduction moves the end of a limb in a circle, combining flexion, extension, abduction and adduction. The shoulder circumducts as a butterfly swimmer's arms circle over the water.
- 4
What are pronation and supination? Give a sporting example.
Model answer
Pronation turns the forearm so the palm faces down, and supination turns it so the palm faces up. A table tennis player pronates the forearm to roll the bat over for topspin.
- 5
What is rotation? Give a sporting example.
Model answer
Rotation is the turning of a bone around its own long axis. The hip rotates outwards as a footballer turns the foot to pass with the inside of the boot.
- 6
What are plantar flexion and dorsiflexion? Give a sporting example.
Model answer
Plantar flexion points the toes away from the shin, and dorsiflexion pulls them up towards it. A gymnast plantar flexes to point the toes, and a skier's ankles dorsiflex as they sink into a crouch.

Every question in Planes, Axes and Movement Patterns, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
