Planes, Axes and Movement Patterns
The sagittal, frontal and transverse planes
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Planes of movement, the sagittal, frontal and transverse planes with their joint movements and sporting examples, the sprinter's leg action, the forehand drive, the side-step and skills in more than one plane.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which movements take place in the frontal plane? Give sporting examples.
How does the transverse plane divide the body, and which movements occur in it?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a plane of movement?
Model answer
A plane of movement is an imaginary flat surface running through the body. Movement takes place along a plane.
- 2
What is the sagittal plane?
Model answer
The sagittal plane is a vertical plane dividing the body into left and right halves. Forward and backward movements happen in the sagittal plane.
- 3
Which joint movements occur in the sagittal plane?
Model answer
Flexion and extension occur in the sagittal plane. Plantar flexion and dorsiflexion at the ankle are also sagittal-plane movements.
- 4
Give two sporting examples of movement in the sagittal plane.
Model answer
A biceps curl takes place in the sagittal plane. A gymnast's forward somersault is also a sagittal-plane movement.
- 5
What is the frontal plane?
Model answer
The frontal plane is a vertical plane dividing the body into front and back halves. Sideways movements occur in the frontal plane.
- 6
Which joint movements occur in the frontal plane?
Model answer
Abduction and adduction occur in the frontal plane. Lateral flexion of the spine is also a frontal-plane movement.
