Weight, plyometric, circuit and flexibility training
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Weight training for maximal strength, power and muscular endurance with a worked 1RM load, plyometrics for a volleyball player, circuit training for a netball squad, and active, passive, ballistic and PNF stretching.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How should a weight training programme be designed to develop maximal strength?
How should weight training be designed to develop power?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How should a weight training programme be designed to develop maximal strength?
Model answer
Maximal strength needs heavy loads of about 85% of 1RM or more for few repetitions. A typical session is 3 sets of 4 to 6 repetitions with 2 to 3 minutes' rest.
- 2
How should weight training be designed to develop power?
Model answer
Power needs moderately heavy loads moved as fast as possible, such as 3 sets of 3 to 6 explosive repetitions. Olympic lifts such as the power clean are often used.
- 3
How should weight training be designed to develop muscular endurance?
Model answer
Muscular endurance needs light loads of about 50 to 60% of 1RM for many repetitions. A typical session is 3 sets of 15 to 20 with short recoveries.
- 4
A rugby player's 1RM squat is 140 kg. What load should he lift at 85% of 1RM?
Model answer
The load should be 119 kg. Load = 0.85 × 140 kg = 119 kg.
- 5
What is plyometric training?
Model answer
Plyometric training uses explosive jumps, bounds and throws to develop power. A rapid eccentric stretch of the muscle is followed immediately by a powerful concentric contraction.
- 6
Explain how plyometric training increases power.
Model answer
The stretch-shortening cycle stores elastic energy in the muscle and tendon during the eccentric phase. A short delay before the concentric phase lets this energy add to the force produced.

Every question in Training Methods, Principles and Periodisation, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
