Fitness Testing and Components of Fitness
Laboratory tests and maximal versus sub-maximal testing
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Laboratory tests, direct VO₂ max testing and its end point, sport-specific ergometers, the Wingate test with peak power and a worked fatigue index, maximal and sub-maximal tests, elite and sedentary testing, and a footballers' test.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does the Wingate test measure, and what does its peak power show?
What is a laboratory fitness test?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a laboratory fitness test?
Model answer
A laboratory test is carried out in controlled conditions with specialist equipment. The results are usually more accurate than those of field tests.
- 2
Describe a direct VO₂ max test on a treadmill.
Model answer
The performer runs on a treadmill while speed or gradient rises in stages until exhaustion. Expired air is collected through a mask and analysed for oxygen and carbon dioxide.
- 3
How do testers know that VO₂ max has been reached in a direct test?
Model answer
The key sign is a plateau in oxygen uptake despite a further increase in workload. A respiratory exchange ratio above about 1.1 and a heart rate near maximum confirm a maximal effort.
- 4
Why should a cyclist's VO₂ max be tested on a cycle ergometer rather than a treadmill?
Model answer
A test that uses the performer's own sport gives a more valid result. A cyclist's trained leg muscles are fully used on a cycle ergometer.
- 5
Describe the protocol of the Wingate test.
Model answer
The performer pedals flat out for 30 seconds on a cycle ergometer against a fixed resistance. The resistance is set from body mass, commonly 7.5% of it.
- 6
What does the Wingate test measure?
Model answer
The Wingate test measures anaerobic power and anaerobic capacity. Peak power, mean power and the fatigue index are calculated.
