Fitness Testing and Components of Fitness
Validity, reliability and interpreting results
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Why coaches test, relevance, validity and reliability with the swimmer example, the multi-stage fitness test, normative tables, comparing with previous results, worked sit and reach and vertical jump figures, skinfolds and the ruler drop.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why do coaches test the fitness of their performers?
What is meant by the relevance of a fitness test?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why do coaches test the fitness of their performers?
Model answer
Fitness tests identify strengths and weaknesses and give a baseline for planning training. Repeat tests show progress and can motivate the performer.
- 2
What is meant by the relevance of a fitness test?
Model answer
A relevant test measures a component that matters in the performer's sport. A sit and reach test is relevant to a gymnast but of little use to a darts player.
- 3
What is meant by validity in fitness testing?
Model answer
A valid test measures what it claims to measure. The handgrip test is valid for grip strength but not for leg strength.
- 4
What is meant by reliability in fitness testing?
Model answer
A reliable test gives consistent results when repeated under the same conditions. Any change in score then reflects a real change in fitness.
- 5
Explain how a test can be reliable but not valid, using a swimmer as an example.
Model answer
A swimmer may score consistently on the multi-stage fitness test, yet running is not the swimmer's sport. The score is reliable but not a valid measure of swimming fitness.
- 6
How can a tester make a fitness test more reliable?
Model answer
A standard protocol should be followed with calibrated equipment and the same trained tester. The time of day, surface, weather and warm-up should also be kept the same.
