Short-Term Responses to Exercise
Stroke volume, heart rate and cardiac output during exercise
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Stroke volume, heart rate and cardiac output with worked calculations, venous return and the Frank-Starling mechanism, heart rate in sub-maximal and maximal exercise and recovery, maximum heart rate, and trained and untrained performers.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define heart rate and give a typical resting value.
What is cardiac output, and how is it calculated?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define stroke volume.
Model answer
Stroke volume is the volume of blood ejected from the left ventricle in one beat. A typical resting value for an untrained adult is about 70 ml.
- 2
Define heart rate and give a typical resting value.
Model answer
Heart rate is the number of times the heart beats each minute. An untrained adult's resting heart rate is typically about 70 to 72 bpm.
- 3
What is cardiac output, and how is it calculated?
Model answer
Cardiac output is the volume of blood pumped out of the left ventricle each minute. Cardiac output = stroke volume × heart rate.
- 4
Calculate the resting cardiac output of an untrained adult with a stroke volume of 70 ml and a heart rate of 72 bpm.
Model answer
The cardiac output is about 5.0 L/min. Cardiac output = 70 ml × 72 bpm = 5,040 ml/min.
- 5
During hard exercise, a trained cyclist has a stroke volume of 160 ml and a heart rate of 185 bpm. Calculate the cardiac output.
Model answer
The cardiac output is 29.6 L/min. Cardiac output = 160 ml × 185 bpm = 29,600 ml/min.
- 6
What is venous return?
Model answer
Venous return is the volume of blood returning to the right atrium through the veins. The heart can only pump out what it receives, so cardiac output depends on venous return.
