Oxygen deficit and the stages of EPOC
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Oxygen deficit and oxygen debt, EPOC and why it exceeds the deficit, the 400 m and the jog, the alactic stage and phosphocreatine restoration, the tennis player's 25 seconds, myoglobin re-saturation and the lactacid stage.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is oxygen deficit?
Why does an oxygen deficit occur even at the start of a gentle jog?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is oxygen deficit?
Model answer
Oxygen deficit is the shortfall between the oxygen needed and the oxygen supplied at the start of exercise. The gap is met by anaerobic energy.
- 2
Why does an oxygen deficit occur even at the start of a gentle jog?
Model answer
Heart rate, breathing and blood flow take time to rise. The aerobic system cannot meet the new demand straight away.
- 3
What is oxygen debt?
Model answer
Oxygen debt is the older name for the extra oxygen taken in during recovery to repay the deficit. The modern term is EPOC.
- 4
What is EPOC?
Model answer
EPOC is excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. EPOC is the oxygen consumed after exercise, above resting levels, to return the body to its pre-exercise state.
- 5
Why is EPOC larger than the oxygen deficit that caused it?
Model answer
Extra oxygen is needed because heart rate, breathing and body temperature stay raised after exercise. Lactate removal adds further to the demand.
- 6
Why is EPOC much larger after a 400 m race than after a steady jog?
Model answer
A 400 m race creates a large oxygen deficit, uses much phosphocreatine and produces a lot of lactate. More oxygen is needed to restore all of this.
