Fitness Testing and Components of Fitness
Field test protocols for each component
- 3 things to know
- Components 1 and 2
Overview
Field tests including the multi-stage fitness test, the Cooper run, strength and muscular endurance tests, the sit and reach, the Illinois agility run, the stork stand, sprint tests, the vertical jump, the ruler drop, the wall toss and body composition.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe the protocol of the multi-stage fitness test.
Describe the Cooper 12-minute run.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a field test?
Model answer
A field test is carried out in a normal sporting setting, such as a sports hall or pitch. Field tests need little equipment and can assess large groups at once.
- 2
Describe the protocol of the multi-stage fitness test.
Model answer
Performers run 20 m shuttles in time with bleeps that get faster at each level. The level reached when a performer can no longer keep pace predicts VO₂ max.
- 3
Describe the Cooper 12-minute run.
Model answer
Performers run as far as possible around a measured track in 12 minutes. The distance covered is compared with tables to estimate aerobic capacity.
- 4
How is static strength tested in the field?
Model answer
A handgrip dynamometer measures the maximum force of a single squeeze. The best of several attempts is recorded in kilograms.
- 5
How is dynamic strength tested?
Model answer
The one-repetition maximum test finds the heaviest load that can be lifted once with correct technique. A bench press or leg press is commonly used.
- 6
How is muscular endurance tested?
Model answer
The one-minute press-up or sit-up test counts the repetitions completed in 60 seconds. The abdominal curl conditioning test instead paces curls to bleeps until the performer can no longer keep up.
