Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why is price fixing between rivals treated as the most serious competition offence?
Model answer
Price fixing raises prices and cuts output while offering consumers no offsetting benefit. Secrecy means the harm can continue for years before detection.
- 2
Name three forms a cartel agreement can take.
Model answer
Cartel members may fix a common price or a minimum price. Members may also share out customers or territories between them. Bid rigging in tenders is a third form.
- 3
What is bid rigging?
Model answer
Bid rigging occurs when firms invited to tender agree in advance who will win. Rival bidders submit high cover prices to make the contest look genuine.
- 4
Explain how a leniency programme helps break a cartel.
Model answer
A leniency programme offers immunity from penalty to the first member that reports the cartel and cooperates. Each member then fears being reported by another.
- 5
Why is a cartel inherently unstable even without enforcement?
Model answer
Each member gains by secretly undercutting the agreed price and winning extra sales. Secret discounts pull the price back towards the competitive level.
- 6
What is meant by abuse of a dominant position?
Model answer
Abuse of dominance occurs when a firm with substantial market power uses it to exclude rivals or exploit customers. Holding a large share is not itself unlawful.
