Oligopoly, interdependence and concentration ratios
- 3 things to know
- All three components
Overview
Main features of an oligopolistic market, concentration ratio and kinked demand curve model of oligopoly.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does interdependence mean in oligopoly?
Why does interdependence make oligopoly hard to model?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are the main features of an oligopolistic market?
Model answer
An oligopoly is dominated by a few large firms with high barriers to entry. Products are often differentiated and the firms are interdependent.
- 2
What does interdependence mean in oligopoly?
Model answer
Interdependence means each firm must consider how rivals will react before it acts. A price cut by one firm forces a decision on all the others.
- 3
Why does interdependence make oligopoly hard to model?
Model answer
The best action for one firm depends on what the others choose to do. A single equilibrium does not follow from cost and demand conditions alone.
- 4
What is a concentration ratio?
Model answer
A concentration ratio measures the combined market share of the largest firms in an industry. A five-firm ratio adds together the shares of the five biggest sellers.
- 5
Five firms hold market shares of 30%, 25%, 15%, 10% and 8%. Calculate the three-firm concentration ratio.
Model answer
The three-firm concentration ratio is 70%, found by adding 30%, 25% and 15%. The three largest sellers therefore hold seven tenths of the market.
- 6
Total sales in a market are £500 million and the four largest firms sell £120m, £100m, £60m and £40m. Calculate the four-firm concentration ratio.
Model answer
The four largest firms sell £320 million between them. The four-firm concentration ratio is 64%, found by dividing £320 million by £500 million.
