Efficiency, unemployed resources and the frontier
- 3 things to know
- All three components
Overview
Productive efficiency, allocative efficiency and how an economy moves from inside its frontier onto it.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define allocative efficiency.
Why can a point on the frontier be productively efficient but allocatively inefficient?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define productive efficiency.
Model answer
Productive efficiency is reached when output is produced at the lowest possible cost per unit. An economy is productively efficient at any point on its production possibility frontier.
- 2
Define allocative efficiency.
Model answer
Allocative efficiency is reached when resources produce the combination of goods society most values. Only one point on a production possibility frontier is allocatively efficient.
- 3
Why can a point on the frontier be productively efficient but allocatively inefficient?
Model answer
A point on the frontier wastes no resources, so production is efficient in technical terms. The mix of goods produced may still not be the mix society wants.
- 4
Give two causes of an economy operating inside its production possibility frontier.
Model answer
Cyclical unemployment during a recession leaves labour and capital standing idle. Structural unemployment caused by industrial decline has the same effect.
- 5
Explain how an economy moves from inside its frontier onto it.
Model answer
A rise in aggregate demand can bring idle labour and capital back into use. Output then grows towards the frontier without any change in productive capacity.
- 6
What is meant by full employment of resources on a frontier?
Model answer
Full employment of resources means every available factor is being used in production. A production possibility frontier is drawn on exactly that assumption.
