Economic problems of developed, developing and emerging economies
- 3 things to know
- All three components
Overview
More economically developed country, less economically developed country and emerging economy.

What economic problems are typical of developing economies?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why must examples be drawn from economies other than the UK when discussing economic problems?
Model answer
Economic problems take different forms at different levels of development. A remedy that works in an MEDC may fail in an LEDC where institutions are weak and capital scarce. Comparison is what shows which conclusions are general.
- 2
What is meant by a more economically developed country?
Model answer
A more economically developed country has high income per head, a large service sector and well-established institutions. Health, education and infrastructure are extensive, and most employment is formal.
- 3
What is meant by a less economically developed country?
Model answer
A less economically developed country has low income per head and a large share of employment in agriculture or informal work. Health and education provision is limited, and infrastructure and institutions are weak.
- 4
What is an emerging economy?
Model answer
An emerging economy is one growing rapidly from a low or middle income base and becoming integrated into world markets. Industrial capacity and financial markets are developing but institutions may lag behind.
- 5
What economic problems are typical of developed economies?
Model answer
Slow productivity growth and ageing populations raise the cost of pensions and health care. Regional inequality persists where old industries declined. Public debt is high in many developed economies after successive crises.
- 6
What is the productivity puzzle in developed economies?
Model answer
Productivity growth slowed markedly across developed economies after 2008 despite continuing technological change. Explanations include weak investment, low interest rates keeping unproductive firms alive, and mismeasurement of digital output. No single explanation commands agreement.
