- 3 things to know

What must accompany a current account surplus?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why must the balance of payments sum to zero overall?
Model answer
Every transaction is recorded twice, once as a credit and once as an equal debit. The sum of all the accounts is therefore zero by construction.
- 2
What must accompany a current account deficit?
Model answer
A current account deficit is matched by compensating net inflows on the capital and financial accounts. Assets are sold or funds borrowed to pay for the excess of imports.
- 3
What must accompany a current account surplus?
Model answer
A current account surplus is matched by compensating net outflows on the capital and financial accounts. A surplus country lends abroad or buys foreign assets with the proceeds.
- 4
Why can a country never run a deficit on the balance of payments as a whole?
Model answer
The accounts are constructed so that every credit has a matching debit somewhere. Only individual accounts within the total can be in deficit or surplus.
- 5
A country runs a current account deficit of £60bn. What must the capital and financial accounts show?
Model answer
The capital and financial accounts must show a matching net inflow of £60bn. Errors and omissions absorb any small gap left by measurement.
- 6
What does a current account deficit reveal about domestic saving and investment?
Model answer
A current account deficit shows that domestic investment exceeds domestic saving. The gap is filled by borrowing from the rest of the world.
