The production possibility frontier and its shape
- 3 things to know
- All three components
Overview
Production possibility frontier and law of increasing opportunity cost at the margin.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is measured on the two axes of a production possibility frontier?
Why is a production possibility frontier usually drawn concave to the origin?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define a production possibility frontier.
Model answer
A production possibility frontier shows the maximum combinations of two goods an economy can produce. The frontier assumes all resources are fully and efficiently employed with current technology.
- 2
What is measured on the two axes of a production possibility frontier?
Model answer
Each axis measures the quantity of one of the two goods produced. A common pairing is capital goods on one axis and consumer goods on the other.
- 3
Why is a production possibility frontier usually drawn concave to the origin?
Model answer
The frontier is concave because factors of production are not perfectly substitutable between the two goods. Opportunity cost therefore rises as output of one good expands.
- 4
What does a straight-line production possibility frontier indicate?
Model answer
A straight-line frontier indicates that resources are perfectly substitutable between the two goods. Opportunity cost is then constant however much of either good is produced.
- 5
Explain the law of increasing opportunity cost at the margin.
Model answer
Each extra unit of one good costs more of the other good than the unit before it. Resources best suited to the expanding industry are transferred first, so later transfers sacrifice more.
- 6
An economy raises food output from 100 to 120 units while machine output falls from 80 to 70. State the opportunity cost of the extra food.
Model answer
The opportunity cost of the 20 extra units of food is the 10 machines given up. Each extra unit of food therefore costs half a machine.
