Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define a product market.
Model answer
A product market is a market in which finished goods and services are bought and sold. Households are the buyers and firms are the sellers.
- 2
Distinguish a product market from a factor market.
Model answer
A product market trades finished goods and services. A factor market trades the services of land, labour, capital and enterprise.
- 3
What is meant by a market?
Model answer
A market is any arrangement bringing buyers and sellers together to exchange a good or service. A market need not have a physical location.
- 4
State the main objective assumed for firms.
Model answer
Firms are assumed to aim at the highest possible profit. Profit maximisation guides the output and price decisions made in the model.
- 5
State the main objective assumed for consumers.
Model answer
Consumers are assumed to aim at the highest possible satisfaction from a limited income. Economists give that satisfaction the name utility.
- 6
What does it mean to say that economic agents behave rationally?
Model answer
Rational behaviour means an agent weighs the costs and benefits of an action before choosing. Consumers maximise utility and firms maximise profit under that assumption.
