Productivity and how it is raised
- 3 things to know
- All three components
Overview
Labour productivity and state how it is measured, production and productivity and how specialisation raises productivity.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define labour productivity and state how it is measured.
Distinguish between production and productivity.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define productivity.
Model answer
Productivity is output per unit of input over a given period. Productivity measures how efficiently inputs are converted into output.
- 2
Define labour productivity and state how it is measured.
Model answer
Labour productivity is output per worker or output per hour worked. Total output divided by the number of workers gives output per worker.
- 3
Distinguish between production and productivity.
Model answer
Production is the total quantity of output turned out. Productivity is that output divided by the inputs used to make it.
- 4
A factory produces 4,800 units using 40 workers in a week. Calculate output per worker.
Model answer
Output per worker is 4,800 divided by 40, giving 120 units per worker per week. Labour productivity therefore stands at 120 units a week.
- 5
Output rises from 4,800 to 5,400 units while the workforce stays at 40. Calculate the percentage rise in labour productivity.
Model answer
Output per worker rises from 120 to 135 units, an increase of 15 units. The percentage rise in labour productivity is 15 divided by 120, or 12.5%.
- 6
Explain how specialisation raises productivity.
Model answer
A worker repeating one task becomes faster and makes fewer mistakes. Less time is lost moving between tasks and tools, so output per hour rises.
