Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a wage differential?
Model answer
A wage differential is the difference in pay between workers, occupations, regions or industries. Differentials arise because demand and supply conditions differ between labour markets.
- 2
How do differences in skill create wage differentials?
Model answer
Skilled workers are more productive and their supply is limited by training requirements. Strong demand and restricted supply together push the skilled wage above the unskilled wage.
- 3
What is a compensating wage differential?
Model answer
A compensating differential is extra pay offered for unpleasant, risky or unsociable work. Deep-sea fishing and night-shift work pay more than comparable jobs with better conditions.
- 4
How does human capital explain wage differentials?
Model answer
Human capital is the stock of skills, knowledge and experience a worker holds. Workers with more human capital produce more value and can command higher pay.
- 5
How can trade unions create a wage differential?
Model answer
A strong union can bargain a wage above the competitive rate for its members. Unionised occupations therefore pay more than similar work in firms without unions.
- 6
How does monopsony power create a wage differential?
Model answer
A monopsony employer faces little competition for workers and can hold pay below the competitive level. Workers in such markets earn less than their productivity would suggest.
